The World’s Top 10 Stock Exchanges
Most novice investors assume the stock market is limited only to the New York Stock Exchange. Below is a list of the top 10 stock exchanges around the world, as well as an additional thirty of the greatest exchanges that did not qualify for the top ten. All of them, most investors agree however, qualify globally, as the greatest.
- The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE):
Most people are familiar with the NYSE not only for its geographical prominence, but with a market cap of $19 trillion, it qualifies as the top of the list. - NASDAQ:
New investors often do not realize the difference between the NYSE the NASDAQ. But in comparison, the NYSE dwarfs the lesser sized, market which only has a market cap of about one third that of the NYSE. - The London Stock Exchange:
The London exchange has some of the cache of the NYSE since it has been around for 215 years, but it is more similar in size to the NASFDAQ. - Tokyo Stock Exchange:
Here we see all the stats begin to drop off as market cap, age and number of companies are consistently smaller than those above it. - Shanghai Stock Exchange:
One of two China stock exchanges. While Shanghai is the larger of the two, it is only a little over 25 years old. - Hong Kong Stock Exchange:
The Hong Kong Stock Exchange is quite prestigious as it was established 125 years ago under British rule, but it is not the largest of China’s exchanges. - The Toronto Stock Exchange:
The TSE is one of the oldest stock exchanges in North America, but it is quite small. - Shenzen Stock Exchange:
This exchange in Western China is much smaller than its Eastern Counterparts with a market cap of $2.28 trillion. - Euronext:
The Euronext rivals the Hong Kong exchange in size with a market cap of $3.32 trillion and it is also quite new having only been established sixteen years ago. - Frankfurt Stock Exchange:
The oldest of the large stock exchanges, the German FSE is 431 years old. It has a market cap of $1.77 trillion.
